Our mutual love for the southwest, particularly New Mexico, brought forth our Heirloom Quilt Pattern. The rich Navajo culture and influence in the area is beautiful beyond words and full of inspiration. Our Heirloom Quilt is a modern interpretation of an ancient weaving design. We chose to create our sample using our favorite southwest palette of turquoise, coral and tan, but we can’t wait to see how everyone else interprets this pattern for themselves.

It is beginner friendly and sews up super quick with simple strip piecing. The pattern also translates really well to other projects such as pillows and table runners.

For our Heirloom quilt, we used our some of our favorite Art Gallery Fabrics Pure Elements solids mixed with The Denim Studio. We used:
Pure Elements Cozumel Blue, Fresh Water, Coral Reef, and Grapefruit
Solid Smooth Denim Adobe Clay and Indigo Shadow
Outland Yarn Dyes Vanilla Mist

We hope you love this pattern as much as we do! We’ll be cooking up some different color schemes, variations and pattern hacks over the next few months, so keep an eye out here!

Say Hello to Cleo, Ginger & Peggy!

Say hello to the newest additions in the family of Butterfly Charm Blocks — Cleo, Ginger and Peggy! These appliqué versions of Nikki’s original paper piecing patterns were designed with Sari’s doodles and are created with a foundation paper pieced body/background and appliqué wings.

They measure 5.5” after piecing and can be used as a 5” finished block or trimmed to 5” for a 4.5” finished square, making them perfect for mixing with 5” charms.

Click here to download the free PDF pattern!

We created our butterflies using Tula Pink True Colors and our SARIELLA Aurifil thread collection. Though we used a zig zag satin stitch, you can create these blocks with a raw edge appliqué method or any other method you prefer.

And while we’re on the topic of our Aurifil Thread Collectionwould you like a chance to win a box set for yourself? Aurifil is giving one away to one lucky winner! All you have to do is create a butterfly charm block and share it on Instagtam or through Linky Post for a chance to win!

You can find all the nitty gritty on how to enter on the Auribuzz Blog post here!

And here’s an example of the ladies in action! This is a Sewing Date Traveler (free pattern from Robert Kaufman) that Nikki stitched up. She used the new appliqué butterflies on one pocket and her original patterns on the other side. Isn’t it the cutest?!

We hope you love this fun little, free pattern and we can’t wait to see what you make! Please be sure to use the hashtag #butterflycharmblocks on social media and tag us @sariellastudios so we can see all your creations!

happy stitching!

ABQ Saki Quilt Workshop Recap

Last month we traveled to one of our favorite places, The Land of Enchantment, to teach a Saki Butterfly Quilt Workshop at Hip Stitch in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We had such an amazing time with some of the nicest people! We all worked hard, but there was plenty of fun, many dozens of donuts and so many pretty butterfly wings! We wanted to share a little recap, mostly in the way of photos, so you’ll be sure to find your way to the next one! 😉

Speaking of which, we’ll be booking workshop dates for 2018 in early Spring and are currently looking at Atlanta, Columbus, D.C., California and Tennessee. If you’d like us to come to your city, shop, or guild, just contact us here!

We kicked off the weekend with a Trunk Show on Friday night at Hip Stitch. I really can’t believe we fit ALL THOSE QUILTS in our luggage. Thank goodness for that Mary Poppins bag…

If you’re wondering what that quilt shown above is, you get the first full peek at our newest pattern, Heirloom, which will be included in the 2018 Quilter’s Planner! Stay tuned for a full blog post about it later this month and be sure to preorder your 2018 Quilter’s Planner NOW before they sell out! Also, we can’t remember what the heck we were laughing about in that picture!

The quilt workshop was all day Saturday and Sunday. We made sure to start each day with plenty of donuts, in true SARIELLA style. The classroom also happened to look like a Patchwork Threads advertisement!

On day one we covered paper piecing and on the second day we covered appliqué and assembly. It was so fun seeing all the variation in fabric selections and watching all the beautiful butterflies come together!

The lovely team at Hip Stitch asked us to curate a few custom fabric bundles while we were there and it was so much fun! There’s really nothing like running around an awesome modern fabric shop and getting to see all the fabrics up close and personal. Neither of us have one nearby and have to primarily shop online, so it really is like being in a candy store!

The first bundle we created is a set of Art Gallery Fabrics Oval Elements that coordinates with our Aurifil Thread Collection!

Next we put together a bundle of Moda Grunge solids in the palette of our Heirloom quilt. Nikki is going to be making a lap size version of the Heirloom quilt using these, so stay tuned to see that!

And last but not least, we curated a mixed bundle made up of various fabric lines and designers. We’ll both be working with ours soon and will share more about it! All of these are available from Hip Stitch if you’re interested!

It’s always wonderful for the two of us to share airpsace since we are normally two time zones apart. We managed to cram plenty of adventures into the few days we had together, including getting stuck in a torrential downpour and spending a little time inside of creepy serial killer drums somewhere on the side of the highway. Don’t we make the cutest little drowned rats?!

We will share our upcoming Saki Workshop dates here and on our Social Media pages as we schedule them, so just keep an eye out for those! We hope to see you there!

Up Close and Personal, Preorders, and a Giveaway!

spools crop.jpg

Today we’re giving you a closer look at our Aurifil SARIELLA thread collection and all the beautiful things you can do with it! You can also read more over on the Aurifil Auribuzz Blog here including a little interview with us 🙂

The SARIELLA set contains 11 large spools of 50 weight 100% cotton thread in ten luscious colors plus white, and one large spool of clear monofilament, all in a handy (and pretty!) storage case.

Our SARIELLA collection is now available from retailers and we are also doing a discounted preorder for those who would like to order directly from us. Preorders will be open here through August 28 and boxes will ship out a few weeks after.

If you’ve never used Aurifil thread, you don’t know what you’re missing. Just a few of the major highlights are that it is made from high quality Egyptian cotton so it’s smooth and seamless, it’s completely lint free (they literally singe all the lint off!), it does not contain any toxic chemicals (perfect for baby quilts and those thread lickers, like me!), it comes in a wide variety of thread weights and 270 consistent colors.

We’re going to show you all the colors in the set and then share some projects and a super awesome giveaway! Aurifil colors have an assigned color number, but we also gave them our own fun names 🙂

Aurifil #2021 (our favorite white) and Clear Monofilament

• • • • •

The colors in our collection were inspired from our logo and matching Saki Butterfly quilt. We taught a Saki workshop in New Mexico last weekend and it was so fun to see everyone using the thread sets on their quilts!

• • • • •

There are so many things to love about this collection, but at the top for us is versatility. The 50 wt threads and monofilament can be used for piecing, top stitching, quilting, binding, hand sewing, and appliqué. The colors blend with an endless number of modern fabric collections, while the white and monofilament spools cover all your basic needs.

We still have so many fun projects in the works that really show off the beauty and versatility of this collection, but here are a few we’ve been working on…

This is a rainbowlicious version of our Neotric quilt made with gorgeous Me + You Fabrics Indah Batiks. It was pieced and quilted by Sari using all the colors in our collection. See how beautifully they work together? We sure do love us some Indah Batiks!

• • • • •

Another fun project we’ve been working on is a set of appliqué Butterfly Charm Blocks to coordinate with Nikki’s original paper pieced versions.

We used the white thread to pieces the bodies and all the colors for the appliqué satin stitching. The fabrics used here are Tula Pink True Colors, another gorgeous pairing!

These patterns will be available as a free download at the end of the month, so stay tuned!

Nikki will be using these blocks as a pocket on a Sewing Date Traveler she is working on. The body will be the adorable snails shown below from Tula Pink’s Slow & Steady line and she’s using the variegated spool from our collection for the quilting. The colors are just perfect!

A couple more amazing quilting projects that Sari recently completed include the quilt shown above for Rebecca Bryan quilted with clear monofilament and the quilt below for a personal friend quilted using all ten colors in ourcollection plus clear monofilament in the background. Both quilts were pieced with Kona solids.

While at our Saki Workshop at Hipstitch last weekend, they asked us to curate a bundle of Art Gallery Fabrics Oval Elements, so we decided to match our thread collection because… well… so pretty! Right?!

• • • • •

We have so much more in the works and so much more to share, but let’s wrap this up for now with a GIVEAWAY! Who would like to win a Sariella Thread Collection for themselves?!
